EuroSkim
Description
EuroSkim,
when used in conjunction with EuroBond , is a water resistant,
acrylic modified cement based plaster suitable for rendering and
patching over most substrates including clay and cement bricks/blocks,
pre cast or site poured concrete surfaces, calcil bricks, aerated
concrete blocks/panels, painted masonry surfaces, expanded polystyrene
and styrofoam surfaces.(Approved alkali resistant fibre glass
mesh must be used in EuroSkim when applied to polystyrene and
Styrofoam surfaces). EuroSkim is designed for use as a skim coat
applied in layers ranging from 1mm to 4mm at a time. The applicator
must make sure the surface to be rendered is stable and free of
adhesion inhibiting materials such as dust, grease, dirt, fungus,
mould releasing agents, excessive water etc. EuroSkim will not
display typical sand and cement weaknesses such as “herringbone
cracking”&“drumminess” greatly enhancing
the life of the rendering job, and providing a stable and protective
surface for subsequent coatings of paint, trowelled on coatings,
etc.
Eurobond
A specially prepared liquid additive to increase the adhesion,
compressive and chemical strength of EuroRender and EuroSkim,
is added to the water in various ratios to make up the gauge.
Euro Bond: Water Ratios for Various Gauges
1. Cement or clay bricks/blocks 1:19
2. Aerated concrete blocks/panels 1:9
3. Pre cast/off form concrete surfaces 3:17
4. Painted surfaces 1:4
5. Expanded polystyrene/Styrofoam 1:4
NB: Eurobond must be used in the correct
ratios in the gauge to mix Euro Skim.
Mixing
Instructions
EuroSkim
can be mixed (with the correct Eurobond/water gauge) by mechanical
mixer or with the traditional concrete mixer. Add the required
volume of gauge to the mixing bucket or concrete mixer then steadily
add the EuroSkim until a mixture that will hold a stiff peak on
the hawk is achieved. Too soft a mixture will run off the hawk
and takes too long a time before the surface can be finished up,
too hard a mix becomes difficult to apply and finish.
Application
Having
made sure the surface is clean, apply the mixture to the substrate
using a steel trowel, taking care to spread the coat evenly. The
surface can then be ruled off with an “English Feather”
or conventional straight edge to level the surface. When the material
has firmed sufficiently it can be floated with a large plastic,
polystyrene or wooden float. On completion of this process, the
area can be again floated with a small hard PVC float to flatten
and smooth the surface even further, and the finished surface
can be sponge finished if required.
On surfaces where some shrinkage of the applied product may occur
(such as raked brickwork), a first coat of EuroSkim or EuroRender
can be applied and straight edged and left for sufficient time
for the shrinkage to occur, then a second thin coat of EuroSkim
or EuroRender can be applied and floated, trowelled or sponged.

Coverage
When
mixed and applied in the correct manner, 20Kgs of EuroSkim should
cover from 2 – 7 square metres, depending on how thick the
layer and how straight and true the substrate is. EuroSkim should
not be applied during extremely hot or windy conditions and should
be protected from rain or run off from downpipes and the like.
Product
Speifications
The
builder and the renderer must make themselves aware of the instructions
contained in the product specification sheets concerning EuroSkim.
If there is any concern regarding the finish or the quality of
the substrate, a test area should be applied and Approved.
Safety
Instructions
- Freshly
mixed concrete, mortar, grout and cement slurry are irritating
and corrosive to the eyes and skin and may cause irritation including
alkaline burning and dermatitis.
-
Avoid contact with the skin by wearing suitable clothing and PVC
gloves. In the event of contact, wash skin immediately with clean
water to minimise possible irritation.
- If
any material gets into the eyes, wash immediately and repeatedly
with clean water or eye wash solution. If irritation persists
seek medical attention.
-
Do not breath the cement dust or dust created form cutting or
abrading hardened concrete, mortar, grout or slurry as it contains
various quantities of crystalline silica which could irritate
the respiratory system and may cause bronchitis, silicosis or
lung cancer.
-
When cutting or abrading hard concrete or mortar, keep it wetted
to avoid creation of dust.
-
Avoid breathing dust by using a suitable respirator. Wash clothes
regularly and separately from other clothes.
-
Manual handling of bags without due care and attention may result
in personal injury. If you have not been trained in the manual
handling of heavy loads it is recommended that you share the load
with another person.
